Biography

Barbara H. Osborn, M.D., graduated magna cum laude from Brown University. She received all of her medical training at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina. This included medical school, a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, and a 3-year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Following her fellowship, Dr. Osborn was in practice for 2 years at the Reproductive Science Center of Boston before joining Shady Grove Fertility in 2002. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology.

Dr. Osborn is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is available for new patient appointments and follow-up visits in our Washington, D.C. – Sibley location.

Q&A

I always loved science in school and the opportunity to use science to directly help people was what brought me to the medical field. Being able to help people have children and create families is the most fascinating and rewarding area of medicine to me; I can’t imagine doing anything else.

I enjoy cycling and travel as both are opportunities to explore and enjoy the world we live in.

I am inspired by my patients every day in different ways. The journey through fertility treatment can be long and hard for some patients. When I see a patient who has endured multiple failed treatments, pregnancy losses, numerous procedures, blood draws, and shots and is still willing, with a smile on her face, to try anything that might help her have a child, I am inspired.

I am most proud of the respect, honesty, and transparency with which we treat our patients.

I try to educate my patients as much as possible about what their test results mean, what is causing their infertility, and most importantly what their options are for building a family. With fertility treatment there is not always one clear-cut path, but rather a choice of different treatment options with varying success rates, intensity/invasiveness, and cost. I try to talk through these options to help patients choose which one is the best fit for them.
